Repressound can be positioned within the triangle spanned by installation, game and karaoke performance. Technically it comprises an unusual way of navigating across video material: through acoustic utterances or body gestures the visitors might alter the development in time of a video they see or make it visible in the first place. On another level, the installation is a social experiment that reveals individual preconceptions, cultural assumptions and subliminal group dynamics.
The piece is highly context dependent, both in terms of the physical space and the cultural setting. The first incarnation was presented in October 2007 at the PING! 4 festival for experimental art in Andratx (Mallorca, Spain), where two characteristic scenes of Michelangelo Antonioni’s L’Eclisse were projected on a metal barrel, in an environment associatively resembling the movie’s exterior setting. The projection is completely dark initially, and only by producing a sustained level of utterance – be it speech, singing, screaming or using the barrel as an instrument – can the visitors gradually remove the dark veil.
